SUSE 11.3 DVD player issues Kaffeine problem
Solution first, install VLC @ videolan.org/vlc/download-suse. VideoLAN media player is the one to use for SUSE 11.3 - for those used to the earlier versions of SUSE Linux, the media player Kaffeine was the one to use. This is no longer true for SUSE 11.3 - no you;ve have you solution there is no need to read the rest o the story - or is there?
Kaffeine will not work in SUSE 11.3 period. End of story. Why? The following citation is from SUSE, " ... patent holders in the Moving Picture Experts Group do not provide patent licenses which are compatible with the distribution of free software ... cannot be part of openSUSE. Even though Kaffeine and Xine are included in the distribution, the required decoder modules cannot be provided, at least not under a free license."
So there you have it. Yeah it's included - but why bother? It just has a bunch of people running around in circles trying to get Kaffeine to work by installing xine, then install libvdpau1, afterwards install packman, and will still - still get a vcd:// MRL error message.
Another goose chase is mplayer via opening tarball, ./configure and then 'make install'. Can add repositories from opensuse.org/distribution/11.3/repo/non-oss or go to packman.inode.at.suse/11.3 - but that would still be a waste of time.
I saved you from wasting your time with Kaffeine with my mistakes and now passing it along to you. Uninstall kaffeine. Then instal VideoLan - VLC player. There are one click installs for SUSE 11.x and a discussion forum.
Google links that show the many problems and questions with Kaffeine.
